OPERATING PRINCIPLES

The treatment of pain is an ethical and professional
imperative for all health care practitioners. The Pain
Society of Southern Arizona proposes to accomplish its
mission through the creation of a community of common
interest dedicated to the promotion of excellent clinical
practice in the treatment of pain by:

Empowerment of Health Care Practitioners to treat pain
in their patients through education.

Creation of a community standard of care that facilitates
the treatment of pain.

Advocate for the interests of our patients to all third party
entities responsible for the distribution of health care
resources.

Promote opportunities for clinical research into the
nature and treatment of pain.

Provide a local resource of expertise to serve community
practitioners.

Commitment to the compassionate practice of medicine
with constant awareness that every human being has the
right to minimize suffering and to optimize the quality of
ones life.

Recognition that pain is encountered in all primary care,
surgical, and specialty practices and that it is an ethical
and professional imperative that physicians treat pain in
their patients effectively and compassionately.

Commitment to evidence based medicine.

Understanding that many analgesic medications have a
potential for abuse and how to minimize abuse
opportunities through vigilance and careful documents.

Empowerment of health care practitioners with the
knowledge necessary to deliver appropriate and effective
palliative care.
